How does this guy get so many whiffs but barely any Ks?

Matt Blake, get to work.

Some solid underlying metrics, garbage actual results. Classic Matt Blake project

This trade makes a lot of sense for both teams. The Rockies might as well take a shot at Rumfield since they have the 30th ranked projection at first base heading in 2026, via FanGraphs. And the Yankees need bullpen depth and are very good at turning arms from bad pitching development orgs into relief weapons.

That is a terrible fastball and maybe leaving coors fixes some of it but there is zero shape to begin with.

Matt Blake is going to turn this guy into a 2026 All-Star, and the Yankees fans will be asking for him to be their closer by playoffs.

Looking at his underlying stuff, dude definitely seems like a prime candidate to cook in the Matt Blake factory.
Plus, TJ Rumfield just had no spot on the roster given the emergence of Ben Rice. So makes a lot of sense for an easy trade.

Rumfeld had the right to opt into minor league free agency this offseason after the rule 5 and chose not to.
He’s got some skills, but that’s telling as to what the league thinks of him.

I love this move. 5 years of control and good velo.

Great velocity but poor movement on the fastball, Matt Blake seems to do pretty well fixing that sort of thing.

I’ve always been kinda baffled by orgs lack of interest in Rumfield and it has to come from him being a 1B only. He hits for a high average, walks at a really high rate, has been hitting for power the last two years and won the minor league gold glove at 1B a few years ago
