Holy shit
I bet Chris Illitch just fainted
He’s worth every penny. Tigers now have like 100M between 3 pitchers
Well deserved
I’d love to be a fly on that wall in the arbitration hearing. Imagine being Skubal listening to ownership telling you how much you suck after winning 2 Cy Youngs.
The Tigers offered how much?!?!?
This along with the Framber signing, Skubal is getting traded right?
Good. If he lost that, no one should ever win an arb case lol
Good for him. I’d much rather see him make it than a billionaire owner keep it.
Thirteen. MILLION. More.
Absolutely deserves it, but fuck. I don’t like where this is going for our future.
Worth it. Tigers played it cheap and lost as expected. Now with Valdez signed, they’ll be just good enough to not consider trading Skubal at the deadline for a kings ransom, and probably get bounced in the first and lose him for nothing outside of QO compensation
Not surprising. All he had to do was walk in with his awards and not say anything. Especially after the Tigers just paid a lesser pitcher, that’s 32 years old btw, more money then he was arguing for. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them trade him now tbh.
As a die hard tigers fan, get your $$ Skubs
Imagine trying to lowball a 2x Cy Young winner who is still in his prime. Hey, we know you’ve been the best pitcher in the AL the last 2 years but you’re not worth paying
Go get em
Welcome to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Tarik Skubal.
Per the ESPN story, this:
>Salary arbitration took a front-and-center role this winter because of the stark disparity between Skubal’s request and the Tigers’ counteroffer. The system allows players with between three and six years of major league service time to propose a salary, typically based on past comparables. While more than 90% of arbitration-eligible players settle their cases, the 29-year-old Skubal was intent on trying to push the boundaries of the system.
>The gambit worked. Leaning on a seldom-used provision in arbitration that allows players with five-plus years of service and so-called « special accomplishment » — back-to-back Cy Youngs qualify — to compare their salaries not just to those in the arbitration system but all major league players, Skubal built his case around starting-pitching salaries that have exceeded $40 million.
And also this:
>Skubal is a member of the MLB Players Association’s eight-man executive subcommittee, the most powerful bloc of players, and with the expiration of the collective bargaining agreement Dec. 1 and a lockout by MLB all but certain without a new deal by that date, some saw the case as a litmus test for the expected fight to come.
That last point should be noted.
We all knew he would win….. he asked for lower then market value, and the Tigers decided to ruin that relationship with a low ball
Tigers probably would have won if they said 28
He’s guaranteed to make $40M in free agency if Valdez is getting $38M a year
Deserves more
Kudos to the Tigers for overpaying by $5-6 million out of sheer greed and stupidity. Clearly Skubal deserves the money more than they do.
Wait, who’s dinner on now?
The dodgers already have 8 years, 600 million deferred waiting for him.
I can’t imagine drawing the assignment « go into this hearing and tell an arbitrator why Tarik Skubal is ass at baseball. »
And people were so sure he would lose the arbitration hearing. I hope he goes somewhere wheee he’s valued
Tigers probably hurt their own case when they signed a pitcher who hasn’t won a Cy for more money than Tarik was asking for yesterday
Anyway, I look forward to the Pirates repeating this process with Paul Skenes next year
Who was the Tigers executive who said « yeah, we’ll win the hearing at $19M! ». Or offer a number such as $28M to avoid arbitration altogether?
Hes worth more, and will get more on his next contract.
Hey Skubal, it’s 80 degrees in LA today. We’ll see you in a year!
The Tigers are so goddamn stupid. They handled this incorrectly in every conceivable way and I’d think this basically guarantees that his long term plans no longer include them (barring a massive overpay).
Sorry, new to mlb salaries. Does this mean the Front Office now hates him and they have to shed potential dollars elsewhere, potentially leading to a worse team then they wanted next year?
Oh. Ok.
Good for him and the path he helped create moving forward for players.
Next year he is a LA Dodger !
Oh wait next year no baseball as owners lockout players.
