He didn’t make an attempt to go to 2nd so he should be called safe. He merely looked in that direction but was out of bounds and shouldn’t be eligible to be tagged out.
Edit: Calls like this are what give the dumb « slide into first! » crowd a better argument.

Once he started hustling back to the bag he made the call for the umpire
Say-it-Again
Ump never even looked at the runner
ElDub1973
Safe.

It’s a judgement call, he kinda just make a motion towards second right before he runs back to 1B. I think it’s debatable whether it’s an attempt, and if this were a reviewable call, I’d say Call Stands.

Don’t know what people are seeing here. Clearly motions to 2nd for half a second right in front of the ump. This is taught to be an out.
Sucks for him because it was only a flinch but them rules are the rules.
Gobstopper17
He made half a stutter step and turned left so I can see why the ump called him out. That being said if I were an Evansville fan and watched this happen I would hack my TV with an axe.
Never made an honest attempt to go to second so if I’m the ump I’d call safe
JerryDipotosBurner
The umpire is never looking at the base runner at any point. He just guesses, and gets it wrong.
The runner should be safe.
GCIV414
He broke towards second even though he didn’t cross the line
SurroundTiny
I disagree with heading to second – he ran into foul territory
Volume_Heavy
He turned left.

Honestly wouldn’t argue either way, but I’d call out. Dude looked like he tried going to 2nd, but it also looked like he just tried stopping.

I see little tweak to left so he is out!
yawn_solo-
Definitely not out.
