Ensuite, il s’est lancé dans des critiques grossières, suggérant à Raleigh de « f— off » et « d’aller en enfer ».

That cleared up…. nothing. I’m more confused than ever.

Man, I sympathize with him here. My parents were good friends with one of my high school friends’ parents. They invited us to dinner at their place one time, only to have to retract the invitation because my friend, out of nowhere, hated me and didn’t want me there. He wouldn’t tell his parents why (I found out years later it was a misunderstanding) and they were so apologetic to my parents about it. I didn’t like him after that, but I always felt so bad for his folks for being put in that position. They were always great to me too.

I mean whatever shake the guys hand it’s not that big a deal but in no way was it necessary for Arozarena to escalate it like that after the game

  4. did the media just not talk to team USA after the game last night or what

Covering this without getting a comment from literally anyone involved is peak baseball « journalism ». An AI trained on Reddit comments could pump out something similar.

Damn, this has the potential to tear the Seattle clubhouse apart. Seattle needs to play it safe and send Randy back to Tampa.

    >It’s very possible that Arozarena wasn’t actually angry with his teammate…

    You think?

lol real world Dani Rojas and Van Damme moment.

  9. Funny how people trying to blame Randy for having an emotional reaction after being snubbed. If we are teammates, I just said what’s up to your parents, and tried to shake your hand and you leave me hanging and say God knows what I’d say the same thing Randy is saying.

Wait so first people get upset that US players are treating the tournament like a glorified All Star Game/vacation and not caring enough but now people are upset that a US player is being *too* serious and how dare he not chum it up with a competitor during a huge game?

I’d be interested to hear Cal’s side of all this.

  12. The thing about the story is that it was was three second moment in the batters box but it’s also a mirror whence we stare into the depths of our own souls. All of existence is suffering. Go mariners.

  13. Even if you don’t want to shake his hand for X Y and Z reasons, just give him a half assed fist bump with your glove. Don’t have to worry about pine tar and don’t have to be a dick to your teammate youre about to spend the next 6-7 months with. Meanwhile we’ve got the Japanese team and the entire Tokyo Dome giving a Czech electrician a standing ovation. It’s a shitty look for USA who can’t really afford to have any more shitty looks right now.

  14. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills on this sub that everybody is surprised that hyper competitive people are weird in the MIDDLE of a competition. Given Raleigh’s outstanding reputation, it seems weird nobody thinks Randy might have slightly over-reacted here.

Gonna come in with a potentially hot take here and say this is absolutely ridiculous. Is it a dick move to not shake Randy’s hand? Sure, but this is a competition and while they are both Mariners, they’re competitors right now.

I just can’t grasp Randy’s reaction. I get being pissed, but dude is big mad. Unreasonably mad for what actually happened. It’s not like it’s common place to dap up the opposing catcher like it is to chat with the infielders on base.

So, during the NHL’s 4 nations face off last year. Two teammates (Sam Bennett and Matthew Tkachuk) fought each other during a game between Canada and the US. Literally trying to punch each other in the face.

They went on to win a Stanley cup together a few months later as teammates on the Florida Panthers.

Are these two incidents the same? No. But I do think it shows once the WBC is over, it’s probably not gonna be that big of a deal to the players themselves.

The translation of the quote is wrong. Arozarena said Raleigh’s parents have good manners (educados doesn’t mean educated in this context and he said it about the parents not Cal.)

Seems to me like Cal was just trying to knock Randy off his game.

And it looks like it worked as well.

And maybe Randy is doing it back at Cal with these comments.

Everyone there wants to win. Otherwise they would not be there. These games are high stakes and there is a lot of pride involved. And it will carry into the season.

Catchers don’t shake hands with batters before an AB. End of story. Learn ball

  20. BlueRemake

Is there a chance Randy had pine tar on his hands from his bat?

  21. semicolonconscious

Raleigh probably should have just dapped up his teammate as a show of good will. Arozarena probably shouldn’t make a huge issue out of it going forward unless he feels the handshake snub is part of a larger pattern of disrespect coming from Raleigh. All the comments I’ve seen that are like “asking for a handshake is outrageous; I don’t even like shaking hands after the game!!!” are unintentionally revealing how excessively aggro some fans and amateur players are. The world spins on. Baseball.

  22. salteddan

A guy not shaking hands with somebody during the middle of a game is not worth getting that worked up about except maybe if you’re a Mariners fan. Otherwise, the amount of hyperventilating about this is absurd.

  23. MarinerJoe3

Maybe the guy who grew up in Tennessee and North Carolina and went to school in Florida is just a good ol boy. But when your country is treating Spanish people like garbage, how do you disrespect a Spanish person like this?

  24. HeftyAd2780

Maybe some catchers make it a personal rule not to shake hands with batters to avoid transferring of substances or to stay focused. The other day this happened with other players as well.

Top notch « reporting » by the nyt. No interview with Raleigh. No interview with Raleigh’s parents, who were mentioned in the article, regarding their son’s behavior. Left readers with no more information than they had before. This is the journalistic equivalent of running into someone at work and saying, « Hey, didja see that at bat with Arozarena and Raleigh? Yeah, me too. »
