J-Rod sneakily jinxing himself to set up a World Series win. Truly a team player for Seattle!

Meanwhile US players leaving to go back to spring training

I get the excitement for the WBC – but if anyone thinks it’s more important then the WS – they are nuts…It’s a spring training tounament – fu? Yes meaningful? not really

I kinda get it. The World Series is obviously considered more prestigious, but this is one he gets to win with a bunch of his fellow countrymen for his home country. The other one is the one he does with a bunch of coworkers for his paycheck.

  5. He just knows it’s more realistic for him to win the WBC

I’m not a player so it’s only one fan’s opinion. How can a few game mini-tournament win mean more than a 162 game grind and 3 possibly 4 playoff series wins?

  7. Goattoagly

Well I mean they are playing for free vs their other job where they have to get paid millions of dollars to show up for work

  8. He’s gonna be in Seattle until at least 2034, so he’s gotta set realistic goals.

As a Brit, I think it’s more an American thing to value domestic success over international, even if the level of competition isn’t necessarily the same. That’s fine, your sports aren’t played in other countries as much, so that makes sense. But in England for example, I think it’d be a very similar sentiment with a lot of players to win the World Cup. So not too surprised that a Dominican feels the same way.

Honestly makes sense. DR will celebrate the shit out of a WBC in a way the US wouldn’t (but should). The pride is different. Neither better than the other though.

I absolutely can not fathom anyone defending this or understanding this mentality. The WBC is an EXHIBITION tournament that has pitch limits, literal high school kids, players who refuse to play, and players who aren’t allowed to play, and it only lasts for a couple weeks.

The World Series is the entire goal of MLB.

Any player who values an EXHIBITION tournament where one of the best teams barely takes it seriously, over the premiere achievement of a team that pays that player millions of dollars to reach that goal, needs to seriously reorganize how they view baseball.

It’s just bonkers that people don’t get this

I mean the WBC is now, bet the answer would flip during the season

Shut up Julio, silly Mariners fans will use this against you any time you struggle now.

Alternatively; Mariners players took public relations lessons from Jerry Dipoto this offseason.

  14. rutfilthygers

The Mariners could trade him at any time, but he’ll always be Dominican. I think it’s fine that he feels this way.

  15. Osobipolar

I dont get how this is controversial, every non American feels this way, mlb is their job, we don’t care if your mlb team wins or not, except joe ramsey apparently

  16. ExpirjTec

good work jrod, you dont have to worry about the world series

  17. Clarice_Ferguson

I can’t imagine a player picking the WBC if they were asked this question in the MLB playoffs lol

Julio may genuinely mean this but he’s being asked at the WBC tournament. Of course he’s picking the WBC in that scenario.

This kind of thing is different for everyone. You hear the same thing about some players when it comes to the Stanley Cup vs winning Olympic gold. It’s not like they are shitting on the other championship. Just one has a little more meaning to them.

Me personally, I don’t give much of a crap about the WBC because of some of the limitations of the tournament and some of the roster construction stuff. But I can get why it would mean more to a lot of people.

  19. Yeah, I get that. Winning with your Dominican buddies, your people in the stands rooting for your actual community instead of some franchise owned by some rich dude. Just a quick couple of week sprint instead of a long slog. Certainly not the highest talent level but you still have to perform. The world series must be awesome to win of course, and is definitely more difficult and rewarding and everything. But I do get it.

Ofcourse it does. Winning for your country will always be more important than winning for your league team. Self explanatory
