An actual hit where it lands on the grass in fair territory? Or just making physical contact with the bat and the ball?

The answer is probably a lot.

edit: Shout out to Ramos and Webb for their answers, which is basically « I’m a pro, and I’ve failed, so regular people will probably also fail even more »

  2. GetBent009

The « average » person probably swings and injures themselves before getting a hit in all likelihood.

  3. TheSeed127

I can get it in less than five tries, as long as Ohtani is holding the bat for me

  4. You’re not even gonna see a major league fastball going by you.

  5. SkyOneStar_02

How long would it take for me to get a hit? Simple. I wouldn’t.

  6. They’ve never seen me play.

    ^(Thank God for that)

I think we have to remember what the *average* American actually looks like. Not someone who played ball all through childhood and has some physical ability hanging around. The *average* American. It’s not pretty.

    That person is going 0-fer

  8. neverAcquiesce

I think I would be far more terrified to attempt a bunt than a swing.

  9. bobcatgoldthwaite

I played bad high school baseball and am now unable to even swing and touch 70 – over 90 no chance for me or the 85% of people worse than me

  10. Not1v9again

Just the weight of the bat and the reaction time vs 95mph and higher is making this super hard for the average person. They’re just watching that go by before they start « cheating » for the fastball and any secondary pitch starts the cycle over

  11. Character_Group_5949

They didn’t quantify this completely. If the pitcher is just pitching fastball straight down the middle of the plate, someone with experience could eventually hit it just by getting the timing down.

If the pitcher is mixing it up? It’s about the same odds as hitting the lottery. It isn’t happening. In 100 swings I’m not sure the average person even foul tips the ball.

  12. Stupendous_man12

I bet it would take me 100+ ABs just to lay down a bunt in fair territory. And with my speed, it’ll take countless more to get one for a base hit. With a proper swing, no chance I’d ever do it.

  13. GravitationalConstnt

I’m not even 40 and last time I went to a batting cage my back was jacked up for like two days. I’m very aware I’d stand no chance.

  14. I played baseball for a decade so I’m probably well above the « average » person when it comes to skill, given that the average person probably hasn’t ever touched a bat. I think it would take years of training for me to even graze a pitch from a major league pitcher, much less get a hit.

  15. Dazzling-Attorney891

I would be vacating the batters box almost immediately so I don’t get hit

There’s not a single chance I get a hit. I don’t even think it would touch my bat

  16. OddishigglyPuff

This is completely bs. Yeah all the American players have a weird ego and think it’s impossible but the average person could make contact without a doubt and anybody who’s ever played baseball would get a hit against the same pitcher in at least 50 tries maybe 75

  17. I’d bet the average person who played through like middle school baseball would be like…

1 in 60-70 hits at-bats Eventually you’ll bloop a single by pure luck

  18. SpecificLife8988

Love Logan Webb, dude you’re a good pitcher lol.

  19. theHagueface

Probably over 100 to make any contact whatsoever and thats just closing your eyes swinging and hoping for the best.

  20. Americanzack

Oh yeah? I just have to wait until the pitcher throws too many pitches and his arm falls off, and then, I’ll still completely miss the ball….

  21. BrianChing25

Sugarland space cowboys had a batting cage that throws straight gas I went in there and made contact with a few but as far as getting a hit nah it was too hard

  22. We’ve all had this conversation and I always argue it needs a conditional.

So one that’s never played or only played causally as a child? Outside of blind luck, they’ve got zero chance. None.

Someone that played ball at least somewhat competitively and has a clue, but is still your average person? They might sneak one through or over the infield given enough opportunities. I’m getting up in age, but I feel like I could make contact on a fastball and squirt one through. If the pitcher is changing speeds and spinning the ball up there? Maybe not.

  23. BigShotzz69

I’m an above average person and betting heavy on myself.. I think I could do it in 15 at bats.

  24. Snoo_74705

Average Joe will swing and miss. Every. Time.

  25. FlorissVDV

I love how Arraez’s answer is basically “just make contact lol”
