Dawson had been boycotting Coopertown since he was inducted in 2010 because he of very well known hatred of the Expos (they were part of the collusion in the 1980s to keep his salary down), he had asked to be inducted with a Cubs cap instead, and according to the article he was still asking for it as recently as 2023.
The HoF had chosen an Expos caps since the majority of his production was with the Expos, which is usually the normal rule. Dawson was upset to say the least. They claim that the blank cap option was not available until 2014, so Dawson never had the chance to select it.
Maybe this compromise will satisfy him?

7 year old me who thought Dawson was the coolest player ever when he was in a Cubs uniform is still a little disappointed, but it’s at least a compromise.

Good call, glad they came around on that.

That’s unfortunate but I understand the reasoning.

Why would you intentionally alienate a guy who’s been elected to the Hall of Fame by putting a cap on him that he doesn’t want in the first place? Especially if that team no longer exists? What’s the upside?

Fuck him.

I became a sports fan in 1987, so I didn’t even know he played for the Expos. He’s a Cub all the way for me.
