Tbh, that sounds stupid. If it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it.

All Star break would only need to be 15-16 days instead of 5. Just push the 2nd half of the season back a week, and the start 3 days earlier. Or shorten the WBC contest to 12 days. Have the ASG after the world series that year – like they do with NFL

IMO it would make no sense to do it mid-season, would be very disruptive, you’d have tons of teams excluding players, etc.
End of the season might make more sense. There might be some fatigue issues but fewer teams would be concerned about short-term injuries or interrupting readiness for the « real season. » There wouldn’t be the time pressure associated with being before or in the middle of the regular MLB season. And it would be a nice bonus for fans not ready for winter.
I’m sure there are reasons why this wouldn’t work that I’m missing, though.

You’d just see the same exact thing but without any players on contending teams
CptMarkoRamius22
The only way you could do that is if you went to like a four nations format with only a few games being played.

I hope Manfred resists calls to host this every three years. Keep it at four, in line with the traditional prestige events of international sport. Don’t want to risk overexposing this.
Sugar3ThousandPounds
I think the happy medium is group play in Spring Training, then QF onwards during the All-Star Break.
I personally like the idea of mimicking the College Baseball World Series with 2 brackets of 4 teams, double elimination, and then a best of 3 final series. But that’d be up to 8 games for a team instead of guaranteed only 3, which I’m sure would be a tough sell
Old-Tomorrow-2798
Yeah, why would we have this super cool and fun tournament during the off season. It should be right in the middle of the regular season. Good teams will restrict players. Bad teams won’t be able to let theirs go because they are bad and need them. Everyone gets worse games. Sounds about right. This is the quickest and easiest way for the WBC to die.

This is why Olympic baseball sucks. The best players aren’t jumping ship in the middle of the season.

How would you have games in Asia ?
Suspicious_Use_7561
July would be ideal, no other sports. Ideal for fans to travel and can use more stadiums
Frankly_Frank_
lol you would just have even less star players on teams. Dumbest proposition ever.
tyler-86
I could see it if they start baking this into their MLB contracts, but that’s going to take time, especially with how long some guys are signed for.
If the league and the owners are willing to assume a good portion of the risk, they might be able to get this into existing contracts in a renegotiation coming out of the CBA discussions for next offseason.
Redbubble89
Half the players already opt out of the all star break.

It’s Manfred, so he naturally sees money here. And MLB would probably put enough money behind it that they’d make more out of it… I just don’t think it would have the same impact.
Timing it to spring training every 4 years or so keeps it a special thing. Fans haven’t had baseball in 3 months, and will come out. Mid season? More people are on vacation, they’ve already had 3 months of baseball… it’s just not as special. Kinda like the all-star game is now.
Anyone thinking that team restrictions would go away mid-season aren’t thinking about the reason they exist in the first place. No MLB team wants their star players getting injured doing anything outside of playing for their team. It’s in player contracts, and will continue to be as long as they get contracts. Teams in a playoff run aren’t going to ok their players to take part (at least not without compensation). Fans might call shenanigans, but imagine the backlash that would happen if someone like Judge was injured in a mid-season tournament and the Yankees missed the playoffs by a couple games as a result. Restrictions aren’t going away.
You’d have fewer people going out, and teams would be built from players not in playoff hunt (which by ’29 could have more teams). Doesn’t make sense to me.
EddyTravesty
It’ll be up to players really, it’ll probably be part of the next CBA along with Olympic participation. MLB really wants this tournament to succeed and be big. Baseball is unlikely to be a permanent Olympic sport unless IOC decides to only award games to cities with existing baseball facilities, which is unlikely, so making WBC a success is their big shot to grow the game.
hundredjono
More teams are going to restrict players, especially in divisions where the races are close.

If we were starting from scratch, a Spring training in April, every four years with the WBC, and then the regular MLB season starts in May would be ideal. Fewer injuries (most injuries happen in April, some not being in tune with the exercise, some being that it is cold out still). Time for the WBC to really get settled and ready to go. No interruptions.
But, we aren’t starting from scratch so I really think being the event of the Spring every couple years is probably the best option. Can’t go after the season cause you step on Dominican ball and Arizona ball. Mid-season is a recipe for disaster.
Now the goal should be to make this work.

We all hate it. They’re gonna do it anyway. Ratings and profits will go up. This is all just a simulation.

A mid season WBC tournament replacing the All Star game could be excellent if the games are played in a smaller time period. I dunno. Just spitballing.

Then we’ll get even less participation. Smart.

It’s already struggling for MLB teams to take this tournament seriously. What teams are going to exhaust their best players mid-season while it starts to get real about which teams are going to make it in the post-season?
