> “I don’t like wrapping sports in a flag and preaching patriotism and bringing in SEAL Team 6 people,” Kay explained. “The only uniform that counts to me is the one that’s worn by the men and women of our military. They decide wins and losses. You don’t represent me because you have USA on the chest, I don’t believe it.”

>“There are people that represent the United States that really represent the United States, and you know who those people are? The men and women of the military,” Kay said. “They decide the greatness of this country, their sheer bravery, how they fight for freedom and throw their lives on the line. That is significant to me. The United States winning the gold medal against Canada? Wonderful. Thrilled for them. Not a referendum on my country, it’s just not.”

“Aren’t we getting a little bit nonsensical with this jingoistic stuff?” [Kay asked](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATCmNzbOq5c). “Mark DeRosa brought in one of the Navy SEAL guys that was part of the group that killed Osama Bin Laden. Okay. Whatever gets the people motivated…but to equate a baseball game to that, I don’t know.”
Seems like a fair point

it was just so out of place. Having the director of the FBI in your locker room out of nowhere (to us viewers when it happened) and then the manager inviting the sea as we were getting footage of other teams dancing and laughing and having a ball. It’s not hand-to-hand combat or storming Iwo Jima, youre playing ball.

The folks who wrap themselves with the heroism and flag of others have all the opportunity to sign up and enlist but never did – instead they want to be “inspired” and be nationalist about it.

Im a veteran who has deployed 3 times. Thats mostly meaningless except to say that I get *fucking embarrassed* watching the performative patriotism at sporting events.
And thats what it is, performative.

“There are people that represent the United States that really represent the United States, you know who those people are? Corporations. Halliburton and Lockheed Martin. Etc.” Former Vice President Cheney said from hell.

Is that sentiment based on the setting/tournament or something? Or just when USA does it?
In the Olympics, that what I’d expect every athlete to do. When an Italian won in their home nation, abso fucking lutely carry that flag and run around with it! Be proud of what you accomplished for your country! That mentality of “I’m gonna win this event for myself and for my country”. Similar, the guy who won the figure skating for Kazakhstan, you best believe he should be full of pride and patriotic for winning his sport! Women’s hockey? Hell yeah! Wave the red white and blue, full of patriotism. On and on, every single event, every single winner
In the FIFA World Cup, when whichever country wins, for sure they should be waving their flag on the field. Their country just won it all! You best believe they won it for themselves and for their country
Four Nations hockey. It’s new, but exact same thing
World Baseball Classic. Again.. exact same thing!
I was sad USA lost last night, but when they panned to the Venezuela dugout with one strike left and some of them were holding flags ready to wave them, I’m happy for em!
Sports on the world stage have always had a sense of pride and patriotism, and that’s a good thing! USA, Japan, DR, Italy, whoever it may be, be proud to fly the flag and showcase your country well

Except for when Latin American countries show pride for their country, then it’s awesome right?
