It’s because he’s 19, played 21 games in AA last year and hit .171 in spring training.

No reason to rush a young kid unless it’s absolutely clear he’s ready. Which doesn’t appear to be the case

They get an extra year of control if they wait to call him up. He could have had a 5.000 ops and they’re better off waiting to get that extra year

No need to give the trashletic clicks. Not enough minor league ABs and had a very bad spring

I know The Athletic has a good reputation in these parts, but I have noticed they aren’t always above garbage clickbait headlines.

  7. Shocking: baseball team sends minor leaguer to minor leagues

It’s definitely a combination of multiple factors. He isn’t quite ready for the majors, and service time rules disincentivize calling up someone who isn’t ready. Not just because he’d get the extra year of service time but because it starts his option clock early. He may have been on the opening day roster if he’d signed an extension, but that might have hurt his development more than getting sent down.

I don’t think this is a Kris Bryant situation where he’ll be called up the very day he secures the extra year. More likely I’d think he’s called up around June if he does well in Triple-A. While the Bryant situation was just about the clearest example of blatant manipulation you can get, most service time manipulation cases are not so black and white. There are legitimate baseball reasons that Griffin should not be on the roster, but there are also service time incentives for it.

Also worth noting that if he had made the opening day roster, that also wouldn’t guarantee him the full year. Matt Shaw, for instance, was on the OD roster last year and got sent down, so he didn’t get his full year. Cade Horton wasn’t called up until May for legitimate reasons (there wasn’t a rotation spot for him at the start of the season but injuries opened up spots) and ended up with a full year of service due to getting enough ROY votes. You never know.
