The game inside the game is always so fascinating to me.

Also, Sheff is on the Mt Rushmore of batting stances.

“If he’s a forkball pitcher, I would just never swing at a forkball.”
    Oh, that makes it easy.

I loved his stance. I used it every year in the show

Adapting your stance to the ballpark is a list skill. Ted Williams said he’d take note of the ballpark dimensions, the weather, the wind, humidity and temperature each game to try to gain an advantage on the pitcher.

Just do this with a new retired player every weekend for a half hour and I’ll watch them all. They don’t even have to be stars; I’d listen to Joe Borchard do this.

Reminds of a video of Bruce Lee describing punching. He says something along the lines of keeping a loose fist and you tighten your grip at the last moment when striking. It gives you the most power.

  12. my second favorite player of all time.

i once traded all of my common baseball cards for someone’s Sheffield cards thinking that he would win the triple crown. he came so close in 1992.

I was in the left field stands while he was taking BP at old yankee stadium. Yankees had an employee with a whistle to blow when he hit his rockets into the stands to avoid killing people
