Huh…interesting. Joey Ortiz, your days are numbered.

I see this is becoming the new norm for teams. Extend players early and buy out a few years after arbitration. It also avoids going through the process of arbitration itself.

I wish *every* team would do this. I see no reason as to why players like Wetherholt, McGonigle, and DeLauter can’t be extended in a similar fashion

  3. Whiplash227

Ok. This is the longest extension signed by someone I have never heard of.

Per Nightengale on a certain single letter platform:

The Milwaukee Brewers are on the verge of finalizing an 8-year deal for slightly more than $50 million with 21-year prized shortstop prospect Cooper Pratt, who had not played above Class AA until this year. The deal will include two option years for about $15 million a year.

This makes absolutely zero sense. I love pratt and desperately want him to be good but we have a Turang who should be getting an extension and this 50 million could be going towards a guy we know for a fact is good

I’m just looking at the numbers, but dude doesn’t seem like a high ceiling prospect to warrant this contract. Didn’t start the year in the majors, batted .238 last year. Is he a defense first prospect that got unlucky?

Interesting… would you take this deal? On the one hand, it’s $50 million! This means if you never get a second contract, you are still set for life. BUT… it’s « only » $6.X million per year and if you are really freaking good you will be severely underpaid and no chance at free agency until you are 29. Also, in 8 years, that number is going to seem even smaller.

Uhhhhhhhh *what*. This some 5D chess move where if he does turn into a good MLB player they get him for extremely cheap i guess

  9. SeattleSporting

In 120 games at AA last year he slashed .238/.343/.348 for a .691 OPS and 107 wRC+

Not exactly the « highly touted young prospect tearing up the minor leagues and soon to be promoted » type that teams give an early extension to try and save some money on the future Arb years

Their in house metrics must really love his defense and think there’s more in the bat than he’s shown

Seems like an overpay for a non elite prospect who hasn’t played above AA

If Cooper Pratt is getting extended, surely that means Konnor Griffin is next, right?

  12. Disused_Yeti

got made pena and jett coming up, seems odd to lock in someone farther down the prospect list

Basically the same contract we signed Rafaela to. Seems elite defenders really can give you a high ceiling “safe bet” for this type of money.

Wonder if we see more of that profile get these types of deals since at worst a 6 AAV for an elite defender is a fine bench player

Seems kinda early but idk . To me baseball is a game that changes dramatically for some guys. Idk if I’d go 8 years on a kid at this age.
