I can understand how he looked away at that moment, he’s human… but if he’s gonna pull a call out of his ass, why would it be that he missed the base?? It’s not like runners missing first base is a common enough occurrence to be plausible lol Jimmy’s point about just initiating a crew review instead of making a team potentially risk a challenge is spot on

I can’t believe he did the DVD player sleep effect and let it go perfectly into the corner. Feels like we’ve been waiting for that our whole lives.

  3. If you didn’t see the call and have to pull one out of your ass, why wouldn’t you go with the outcome that happens 99% of the time?

If he called the runner safe and it turns out he missed the bag by a centimeter, no one’s going to blame him.

  4. He clearly didn’t see the bag, like Jomboy says, and assumes he missed the bag because the Rays threw to first. Meanwhile the Rays were just going to appeal whether he tried to go to second (which he still didn’t) because guys tend to do that when there’s an errant throw.

It’s pretty simple. In the absence of evidence that a bag was missed, you rule the runner safe. No judgement call needed. If you didn’t see it, he’s safe.

The biggest issue here is that if Milwaukee didnt have any challenges remaining then that shit call by CB would have stood with no correction.

Jimmy’s right that there needs to be an umpire review for this type of ridiculous situation to ensure it doesnt happen again and the team has no challenges.

  7. Is CB okay? It’s one thing to miss a bunch of ball/strike calls, or to be a egotistical asshat that loves to interject your ego into everything, but this seems more like a guy who’s losing their marbles.

  8. The new angle is nice. Jomboy’s point at the end is the right sentiment. Umpires should be allowed to say « I blinked, I missed it, let’s do some sort of review to get it right ». If they could do that they wouldn’t be dunked on over and over again, and if they rely on it too much, maybe let someone else do the job who’s younger.

Plouffe and Rose also put out a good point a few days ago saying that some umps who are aging or underperforming shouldn’t cycle onto calling balls and strikes, have them focus on 1B or 3B umping. It’s what the coaches, players, and staff do anyway.
