Is this the worst challenge of the year so far? First pitch of the game and it’s not even close

Will had been pretty decent at challenges (9/14, 9th out of 60 catchers in « overturns vs expected ») up until now, but this was terrible

Even if it was a strike it’s still not worth it to use it so early

A lot of teams are probably gonna implement stricter rules for when they’ll challenge. E.g. Top of the first with nobody on means no challenging

Does Ohtani usually touch the back of his hat like that? Hadn’t noticed it before and he did it just before Smith actually challenged it.

I’m in the « this system shows how good the umps are » camp. Calling balls and strikes has always struck me a difficult undertaking.

  6. Wait that looked like a nice top of zone strike the way he framed it. You’re telling me it was low?!?

I’m not sure which is worse, the framing or the challenge.

and he tryed to frame up to the very top of the zone.

Cant argue with how good they are, and the rings show that but man it felt good seeing will smoth tap his head only to sit there and look like a complete a idiot lol

  9. Dodgers out here doing challenge runs at this point

Can you win an MLB game in 2026 with ZERO challenges??!

Batters are talking a lot of shit rest of the game to the catcher right?

He was going for the elusive « perfect ABS game » (challenge every single pitch and prove the ump was wrong on every pitch). Ah well, try again tomorrow

From what I have seen and heard from announces catchers, pitchers and hitters all seem to not have a grasp on the lower ball calls.

  13. I can’t wait to see at the end of the year which catchers have the best and worst challenge percentage.

  14. I think I saw someone say that Will Smith probably saw Ohtani adjusting his hat and mistakenly thought he was requesting a challenge. Will was probably just making sure the request was granted.

They did this on purpose. The challenges make the game to easy for them.

Of course the Dodgers had to also steal “worst challenge ever” award

  17. Best thing about the ABS is if a hitter or pitcher tries to show up the ump by disagreeing with their call, the ump can just be like « then why don’t you challenge it »
