This doesn’t feel like he was initiating a challenge to me.

Also I think this illustrates a need for more explicit rules around initiating the challenge.

Should be 3 taps on the crown of the helmet or a verbal “challenge” call or something else that can’t be mistaken for another action or adjusting equipment

  2. TatisToucher

challenge should be a jerk off and release motion directly at the ump

  3. They should change the challenge signal to something the players do inadvertently less often.

    Make it grabbing their groins.

  4. I’d probably be upset about this if I thought the next batter would have done anything

Challenge should be like what they do in tennis. Finger up in the air. Edwin Diaz might set a record for challenges lost

If Gausman technically balked Rice technically challenged. Looking forward to the Jomboy breakdown

  7. yeah the ump is just being petty. They need to change the signal.

Umps still gonna find a way to get in the way of the game

Team has become stupid as hell this past week. Mid season form already

I’m probably in the minority but between the bat toss and the move to the helmet it definitely did look like a challenge…

I can’t help but think the challenge signal should be a gesture that maybe someone wouldn’t do by accident.

I think Rice clearly thinks that’s a walk and challenged. He wouldn’t have thrown his bat and go to take off his gloves if he knew it was a strike

  13. Idk. I can see how this looks like a challenge. it’s a bad signal lol

  14. Master_Hospital_8631

Three rapid pelvic thrusts should be the signal.

How often does a guy toss his bat to the dugout and start taking off his gloves when he’s called striked out, pretty obvious combined with the hat tap he thought he was walked and wanted a challenge

  16. bobcatgoldthwaite

Why isn’t the signal pointing up to sky ? Ton of guys touch their helmet out of habit

  17. igotagoodfeeling

They need to replay whether he actually touched his helmet or not. Looked like he checked his swing in helmet touching terms

NGL this looks like he challenged, immediately regretted it since maybe he’s not supposed to/allowed to from his coaches to challenge here? I’m on the side that players shouldn’t be allowed to “say sike” here, but also prob need to change the challenge signal to something that happens less often inadvertently

  19. Bubba Chandler just won a challenge he said was inadvertent initiated by adjusting his cap.

Make them tap their helmet and rub their belly at the same time

  21. Isn’t the rule that it has to be the first movement you make?

  22. Vivid_Ad_1016

They should make it if the batter touches the ear like managers do on replays as the universal abs challenge signal

  23. fearthereefer52

I thought the challenge had to be the first move? So tossing the bat should have negated being able to challenge.

    New signal. Thoughts?

  25. BASEBALLFURIES

every player gonna get a red challenge flag like nfl coaches… or maybe something like red for one team, yellow for another

  26. I thought a challenged only happened if a player touch his hat BEFORE he made any other motion, like tossing the bat.

  27. paligators

Maybe change it to a hand on the helmet but you leave it there?

  28. CottageGrove81

Umps are gonna find a way to fuck things up no matter what
