You don’t have to miss out the most interesting quote in that piece in the rush to post anything about the Sox, my guy:
Interestingly, when Contreras was asked if the team was perhaps pressing in the aftermath of the firings that took place last weekend, attempting to make the best of a fresh start, Contreras suggested something to the contrary.
“It’s different with Alex not here,” said Contreras. “But after Cora got fired, the guys got loose a little more because I feel like the tension was gone…That’s what I felt. That’s my own opinion. When Alex wasn’t in the dugout (anymore), the team was kinda like loose. But that doesn’t matter. We have to play better. We have to find consistency. We have to get better, we have to be better.”
This Week,
On Days Of Our Sox

Everything seems to be going great over there.
Amazing vibes in that clubhouse
Just what this organization needs. More squabbling between different factions. Now it’s the vets vs rookies.
Also if I’m Marcelo I’m thinking “why is the guy who ground into an inning ending double play with the bases loaded yesterday putting the blame in the young guys”?
Fight fight fight
I don’t even think Contreras meant that as an insult. But if Mayer wants to take it as one, sure.
Orioles fans: “Hey! I’ve seen this one before!”
This team is giving me suicidal tendencies and I’m not talking about the wanting a Pepsi kind

In a normal clubhouse, this would be taken normally as it’s kinda true. Fighting out of slumps is usually one of the first things younger players learn once they’re at the Major League level.
But because the Sox clubhouse is a nuclear wasteland, the young kids respond with a « no u. » Since there’s no leader apparently worth a shit within a 10 mile radius.
Red Sox have blatant chemistry issues.
I’m loving this Red Sox season more than the Yankees season

Me as a Jays fan
Willy is probably fuming he agreed to give up his NTC at this point
I don’t think it was meant as a dig at the young Red Sox players but no matter how you spin it, it is shifting some amount of blame onto them. Mayer is just protecting the confidence of the younger guys.
Contreras also hasn’t really earned himself much good will during his career.
This is fine
Meanwhile, Alex Cora:

I said it in the Sox sub but this reads like a total misunderstanding of what Contreras was saying.
He was saying that the young guys under Cora weren’t given the opportunties to break out of slumps so they’re struggling a bit now because of that. He follows up later with saying without Cora everyone’s finally loosened up a bit.
Mayer seemingly took that the wrong way.

Red Sox randomly go through these stretches as an org where their locker room is a dumpster fire, only to rattle off a World Series the next year.
This just in: MLB scouting and tape review is better than AAA.
