The umpire needs to audibly call out balls. That’s what the problem is. The catcher gets an audible call for a strike and silence for a ball so he has to sit there and wait for a strike call that never comes and then is told he waited too long to challenge it. It’s dumb and easily fixable by having every umpire audibly call their balls and strikes since catchers don’t have eyes in the back of their heads.

  2. They both should be granted, it takes a second to figure out the ump called a ball if they don’t say it out loud, but the second one wasn’t even a little slow.

edit: Also a little funny that I think both catchers would have lost the challenges if granted.

If you don’t say “ball” then you can’t punish the catcher for not calling it right away

  4. What a fucking idiot. It’s like he wanted to see how this egghead performance stands up the next day. Ass.

We have the technology. Why even bother with these egotistical clowns .

just have ABS call balls and strikes and have the HP ump throw balls back to the pitcher.

Baseball episode 5 : the umpires strike back

  8. Maybe these guys just don’t *want* to call balls and strikes any more. If it’s too hard for humans, then let the robots do it

The umpires who try their hardest to do the best by the players and the fans alike are so egregiously failed by these examples that the only remaining answer is to remove their collective judgement.
