    > Nobody from Taiwan would ever refer to their country as Chinese-Taipei like this.

No doubt about it, people there in Taiwan REALLY wants them and their national team to be called as Team Taiwan alright [as evidenced by this video yesterday](https://youtu.be/QDJ0XCqMYu4?si=WG6UMR-465eyBaDI).

There is a quote later in the article from one of the fans saying « Our members come all the way from Taiwan… ».

So either Cheng did say Chinese Taipei (maybe the players are under instruction) or the writer is being inconsistent in the replacement. A further option would be that the Cheng quote actually came via team PR rather than directly from the player.

The article made 2 references to Taiwan in the article from quotes from band members, when they were talking about the country

It seems like he only used Chinese Taipei when referring to the team specifically, he is remaining consistent in that usage as far as I saw.

Except for that Chung quote. Either Chung said Taipei or there was an error in translation or editing, probably the latter

I want to shit on this writer because a quote is a quote. But I will say that it is really strange that other quotes in the same article outright use Taiwan and Taiwanese.

  5. “Who flew from Chinese Taipei” lol. Chinese Taipei isn’t a fucking place. It’s like saying “the team flew from American New York to compete”, not only is it not factual, the place isn’t a place.

Might have been an editor who insisted on it…

with a leftist at the game who kept insisting they were chinese taipei. reminder that even leftists have some brain dead takes.

I’m Taiwanese and have followed Michael’s works for years (since the MLB Cut4 day), he is a really friendly guy and I honestly believe this was probably just a slight mistake when writing the article.

Stop finding random stuff to be mad about

As a Taiwanese, I will say it again and again. Calling Taiwan « Chinese Taipei » is like calling someone with a stupid nickname that their bully gave them.

We are Team Taiwan. China can take our name away but they could never take our passion in baseball away

Just call it Taiwan. Who cares if it makes Taiwanese Beijing mad? They can’t even qualify.
