It seems to me that the talk about baseball being dead was greatly exaggerated.
Viewership numbers for average NBA game in 2025: 1.91 million viewers: https://www.winsportsonline.com/research/nba/nba-viewership-statistics/
Massive in the US, but here are the single-country record viewership numbers, set in Japan 🇯🇵 during 2023 WBC: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Baseball_Classic_television_ratings
2023 Quarterfinal (Japan vs. Italy): 38.1 million
Semifinal (Japan vs. Mexico): 32.4 million
Final (Japan vs. USA): 29.0 million (Tues AM local)
And then there are people who have the gall to call this just an »exhibition » tournament. Even this isolated pre-season »exhibition game » feels like a playoff game in terms of viewership, and that’s not even counting the viewership worldwide. Venezuela vs. DR, same story. Packed stadium, elite-level baseball.
The owners and pundits tried so hard to make American baseball fans to not take the WBC seriously in order to smother it in the cradle. So nice to see that it ultimately didn’t work and that the momentum of American fans taking it seriously is undeniable at this point
Cmon guys, the WBC is just an exhibition. ST is what truly matters.
