  1. Aside from the extreme, what do abusive comments typically look like in Japanese culture? I can’t imagine they’re as harsh as comments in western culture, though the Japanese are very passionate about baseball.

Genuinely curious. I’m asking, not making a statement.

Edit: I’m done here. Jfc this got out of hand really quickly. Holy fucking hell.

Fans are fucking shits, let’s be honest.

See we are all the same. VZ fans and Acuna mocking Japan by saying they ate sushi. Junior caminero with his bush league run up the line at end of game. Cal Raleigh won’t shake hands just like the Australian catcher and Japanese fans abuse their players like we Americans do.

This is what the WBC is about. Realizing we are all POS. Doesn’t matter Nationality.

Rabid fans are legitimately insane. Full stop.

Wow Japan is so classless. This is why I cheer for Japan, they just emphasize class.

Incredible big heart to stay positive in the face of malicious comments. I’m rooting for you. Looking forward to your progress and return to glory.

It is unfortunate that he apologized for other people being abusive toward him. Stan culture, no matter the fandom, is deranged.

Man, I can’t really talk about Japanese sports fandom with any level of SME, but I will say, crap like this is only getting worse in the States. It’s a byproduct of the gambling culture that we seem hellbent in engraining in this generation of sports fans.

Not by ANY means supporting it, you’re a bottom of the barrel human being if you’re abusing and threatening a player over a game. When you see 900 DraftKings ads a day though, and a gambling addicts wife is leaving him because he bet and lost the mortgage payment, it’s not hard to connect the dots.

I wish as a society we’d treat sports gambling (and gambling in general) like they did cigarettes in the 00s, at a minimum. Legal, but you can’t advertise for it, and we collectively frown upon it and shame those that do it. It’s not “cool”, it’s a cancer.

That’s the thing about the wbc it’s such a small sample size

Its unfortunate cause Kondoh was literally my favorite NPB player until he moved to the hawks. He was such a good hitter for us, always seemed to get a hit every game. Unfortunate that he became a power hitter only after leaving us to join a rival team. 🙁

Imagine having to apologize to the people that are sending you abusive comments for not playing well enough in the WBC. Crazy times, man.
