He tapped his head instantly lol. Wtf is he so angry about.

Umpires often don’t make a very obvious call on ball 4 the way they do strike 3. The pitcher still went to his cap within one second of the non-strike call.

Helsey tapped his hat almost the instant the ball hit glove and then tapped again 2 seconds later.

Shelton, like the ump, clearly didn’t see the first tap from Helsley ,which was one very quick tap on the brim of the cap. He tapped it again cause the ump didn’t see it. Especially with pitchers usually not being the ones to challenge, they were likely looking at the catcher so it would have been very easy to miss.
Had Helsley’s initial challenge actually been the second one, it probably should have been rejected for being too late and Shelton would have the right to be upset.
The cameras were likely the only ones who saw the first attempt at the challenge.

Agree with the other comments. I don’t think Shelton saw the initial tap.

Wow. The pitcher tapped well within the two seconds or whatever–he went to the cap immediately and then repeated the signal again. All I can think of is that Shelton didn’t see the first one but even then this is a pretty dumb thing to get yourself tossed over.

Great call. You can’t argue with the robots

Should catchers start winging a snap throw to first after a close ball-four call? If the first baseman tags the runner off base and the ABS challenge overturns the walk, that would be a pickoff, wouldn’t it?

I’m glad Shelton is still out there doing what he loves.

ABS is good. The whole tapping the hat fast enough thing might need some work.

What a dork. Don’t you know you don’t mess with Skynet?

Shelton was probably just cold and wanted to eat some weird hot casserole in the locker room.

There new bad pitch call controversy is now just straight up denying the challenge.
