Shame Cal couldn’t challenge the MVP vote

  2. MeatTornado25

And then they almost burned both of them in the 1st inning when Kirby himself *juuuust* got an overturn by like a millimeter.

Where is the ABS zone measured? If it’s the back of the plate instead of the front, I can see that being tricky for curveballs

  4. SeattleSporting

Looking at the statcast ABS data, they do seem to just put >3″ on things that far out of the zone and it subsequently doesn’t show on the video board

I wonder if there’s a technical issue preventing it from getting exact distance data that quickly when it’s that far or if the league just felt like it wasn’t worth it for stuff like that

  5. ActualDragonHeart

When they dont display the distance it should just say “get your shit together”

  6. Doublestack2411

He fooled himself with that frame-job.

Those sliders are going to be different this year with the ABS measuring at the center of the plate, they look a lot closer when you look at the front.

bad outcome but I don’t mind being more kneejerk to challenge against someone like Judge.

  9. ace82fadeout

Ehh, that ball absolutely snapped. I can somewhat see why he thought it may have broke late after it crossed the plate

The confidence you need in your judgment to challenge makes the embarrassment of being wrong so much more hilarious

  11. PegyBundy

Tbf that’s always been called a strike against Judge.

Cal is having a bit of a rough first week lol. Couple good moments but otherwise, woof. Not just him though, Julio and Naylor look just as bad.

  13. swiftiesarecancer

He got confused and thought Altuve was batting for some reason

  14. lubedupnoob

If that’s where he thinks the strike zone is no wonder why he’s swinging so bad right now 😂

  15. jaron_b

It’s starting to get embarrassing Cal.

  16. imyourdoctornow

Starting to think Cal isn’t too bright.

Can we talk about how awesome ABS is? It’s so much more fun knowing umpires have some semblance of accountability and seeing players challenge has made games so much more entertaining and less frustrating.

Umpire was probably thinking « If I was wrong on this one, I quit. »

He’s just setting the tone early. Like a rhino stomping the ground to alert you that you’re in their territory.

If anything he should have challenged a ball in the dirt to show how locked in he is. Put blue on notice that anything can be challenged at any time.

Maybe it’s time to stop the bush league framing attempts when you know that cameras don’t work that way. Pulling the ball up 6 inches when it’s in the glove only fools old shits like CB Bucknor so maybe it’s not so useful any more.

So, this guy challenged a clear ball on pitch 6 with a 1-1 count in the top of the first inning?

Wasn’t this guy supposed to be a good player/catcher or something?

  22. Reasonable-Front7584

They should’ve zoomed in on Bellinger for his commentary.

  23. pistonhonda1979

I have a bad feeling we’re about to see a big time coming back to earth from Raleigh this year

  24. vvashington

“This guy beat me last year even with called strikes missing by THAT MUCH??” – Cal probably

  25. Elxis14

Don’t watch Mariners game but does Cal does this a lot?

I love ABS but I hate the superiority gives people in the comments.

Remove the TV box and look at that pitch. It looks like a fucking strike because it’s a great fucking breaking ball that had a demon snap to it.

A slider like that is dropping about an inch or more beteeen the front of the plate and the midpoint where ABS tracks.

Judges’s zone is slightly higher than everyone else’s.

So you combine the usual bottom of the zone against any other hitter, with the snap on that slider, and the pitch being very close to hitting the front of the actual 3D strike zone that ABS doesn’t call, and it’s not a bad challenge, especially to get ahead on Judge.

Y’all have to realize that just because a pitch is off the ABS zone doesn’t mean it’s an egregious miss.

For challenges that are off by X” (maybe more than 2?) the ball should turn into a clown emoji briefly at the end of the animation. Just my two cents

  28. KingMobScene

I want it to be a rule that we need to see the distance on challenges.

  29. Masta0nion

Cal peaking up at Aaron 🙇🏻‍♂️
