It does look like he thought Ohtani wanted to challenge. Didn’t notice that before.
Dave Roberts looked PISSED
Made the cut is quickly making me a massive fan outside of Jomboy for clips like this! Just wish they were a little longer
I think he wanted to challenge. But I know if I was in that moment and made a close pitch that doesn’t get called a strike, I’d instinctively just put my hand on my head similarly to Shohei in a like an « man, I thought that was there. » Almost like running your fingers through your hair as a way to center yourself.
It’s possible but imo it doesn’t really make sense
They have plenty of data to show that Pitcher’s are the worst at ABS calls because they have a horrible vantage point after releasing the pitch and are (self admittedly) more emotional.
You only have 2 seconds to challenge so to try and really from pitcher to catcher to umpire is basically asking the catcher to immediately issue the challenge
I’m still confused why the 1st pitch of the game was challenged. It wasn’t even close. BUT EVEN if it was close to being a strike, surely a 0-0 count with no one out is the LOWEST leverage situation – you have to be 100% certain of an overturn to challenge that?
I mean there’s 3 possibilities right?
**a) Will Smith mistook Ohtani touching his cap as Ohtani wanting to challenge, so Will Smith did it**
– the Dodger Pitchers need a much clearer way to relay that – not something Ohtani and other pitchers do regularly after every pitch.
– though I’m not opposed to pitchers wanting to challenge but if it’s stupid, the Catcher can « veto » by refusing to challenge.
**b) Will Smith genuinely belived it was a clear strike 100%**
– somehow his « framing » by yanking it to the top of the strikezone fooled himself into thinking it was 100% a strike
**c) Will Smith thought it was very likely a strike e.g. with 75% certainty**
– in which case it still is -EV to challenge on a 0-0 count with no one on at the beginning of the game even if you are « very certain »
What do you think was the case?
Here is the [Break-Even % of based on run-expectancy ](https://preview.redd.it/did-shohei-ohtani-just-issue-the-first-accidental-abs-v0-ntg62x0m7dug1.png?width=1529&format=png&auto=webp&s=a1a8a79461925fbf881250ee3bffe73f921f3c4c)for Challenges based on different counts.
I saw it live (on tv) and watched for it the rest of the game. He does that a lot « fixing » his hat.
No. The other day Bo Naylor did an ABS challenge when he meant to appeal for a checked swing
OP why did you download the clip to post it, instead of posting the link directly? MTC’s content is great. People won’t go to the linked source if they already watched the video here.
Should be something like « three distinct taps » to top of head » to avoid any misunderstanding.
I was waiting for something like this to happen. I’ve seen too many players just tap their head without even looking at the umpire/making sure the umpire is looking at them, which I feel is the bare minimum. Also, lots of players touching their head out of frustration after a call they didn’t like, or just as a tic/habit. There should be a signal, acknowledged by the ump, and maybe a verbal signal thing like « challenge ». Or do the head tap and the soccer VTR box motion.
He shouldn’t be allowed to challenge anyway, he’s a position player pitching
Genuinely hilarious how pumped Vlad is to not get swept by the Dodgers in April lol
What if I told you pitchers used to hit all the damn time?
