  1. He’s just conditioning the league, saving his first swing for a big moment

You can call it dumb but like getting Luis to 2 strikes even matters

I hate it when hitters do that. Swing at the damn pitch, bro. It’s a goddamn meatball.

Tie game, Ohtani 0.00000000 ERA. Arraez doesn’t walk, is confident he won’t strike out. Get the pitch count up another tick for free.

I bet the expected value of a straight take is slightly +

Someone do the math and I swear I’ll buy you a coffee.

Use 2.50 as Ohtani’s expected ERA, 4.00 for any relievers, 100 max pitches for Ohtani, Arraez’s actual batting stats in all counts over the past 3 years for his results matrix, tie game continues/all else equal

(I have to approve the methodology if you want the coffee though)

  5. I hate it when batters do this. It’s not the decision to decide before time to not swing that I hate (Though I don’t like it… at least stay open to the possibility of swinging at what looks like a meatball), it’s just that I can’t possibly see the benefit in making it obvious to the pitcher that you won’t swing no matter what.

  6. I had a little league coach who would make us do suicide sprints if we swung at the first pitch and got out Luis is just like me fr

  7. Arraez one tool player with no power. Huge overpay by the Giants. At least they moved him to 2nd base. Not a great fielder and cant run a lick.

Hahaha, including that pre-ass jiggle, I love this guy.

(and, no, I actually mean Luis here)

I actually think context matters a touch here. Ohtani was in the middle of like a 4 or 5 (i forget exactly) pitch inning for the first two outs. He ended with a 7 pitch inning so it’s not like this did anything, but I think this was a team take, like to make him throw an extra pitch, maybe he goes out of the zone and you get the pitch count up a bit.

However, I don’t like that Luis made it obvious.

His lowest being 95 and topping out over 100 while also being able to send a ball to the next county over is absurd

He was trying to get the pitch count up during what was like a 6 pitch inning you guys clearly don’t know ball I’m sorry
