I flipped the x axis to make « top right good » since so many people ask for that when measuring « bad » stats.

Fun fact I debated throwing on the chart but decided not to – Junior Caminero and Brady House both have 5 errors, meaning they have as many errors at the entire Athletics team.

Defensive Runs Above Average is the Fangraphs version – data taken from Fangraphs, plotted utilizing R through RStudio. As always, credit to u/aweinschenker and u/Mispelling for the hand drawn logos – do better if you want your real logo!

As a causal baseball fan – but chart fan – it would be nice if X is average errors too, maybe per 10 games? I don’t really know how many games have been played, but the Y is an average

The players on our team who can defend can’t hit, and those who can’t defend…also usually can’t hit.

  4. Kansas City at the top with the Dodgers and Padres, surely they are as good as them? /s

I’m not sure I understand the point of this post. It seems like you’re saying that errors look bad, but they don’t actually have any impact, but this chart doesn’t show that. For one, it shows that there is a correlation between these two stats. It’s not particularly strong, but given how few errors happen in a game, I wouldn’t expect a particularly strong correlation. Secondly, just because some teams have good defense overall, but commit a lot of errors, or vice versa, doesn’t mean that errors don’t have an impact on overall defense. Maybe the Blue Jays would have the best defense in baseball if they committed fewer errors, and maybe the only reason why the Brewers don’t have the worst defense in baseball is because they don’t commit many errors.

Errors are the most broken stat in MLB.

How many times has each team clanked a ball and recovered in time to make the out? Or better yet, the batter reaches safely and gets credit for a Hit even though the fielder themselves will tell you they should make that play all day long. Then you have outfielders misplaying a pop-fly into a hit because you can’t give an error on a ball they didn’t touch.

There are too many ways to list for a run to score on poor play that doesn’t get recorded as an official error.

But I was told our defense was bad bc a shortstop moved over to third base…

  10. That looks about right for us. Red Sox fans love to act like we’re a shit defensive team because they « see it » and errors are the only stat they know.
