The tweets breaking this just broke me a few minutes ago.
I will now say, perhaps it was not just a whim that made me listen to the radio audio feed of yesterday’s game…
Fuck.

A legend by all accounts. Baseball will miss him
Sandwich_Crust
He and Castig just were parts of my childhood on the radio. Rest in peace.

R.I.P., John. You are certainly one of a kind, a legend, and most importantly, a great human being.

It feels like he just retired wtf

RIP to a Legend, now put him in the Hall of Fame

This was not what I wanted to see headed to work this morning. Damn.
RIP to an absolute legend

The radio was my only option for consuming Yankees games until my dad got stable work late in high school, I spent hours in the mid-2000’s listening to John and Suzyn in the car. One less connection to my dad and grandpa, what a sad way to start the day

Absolutely fucking devastated. The voice of mine and many other Yankee fans childhood for 50 years. Rest in peace to an absolute legend

God needed him to call those games in Heaven.

I’m glad he got to call one last World Series run for us at least

I’m 42 and a lifelong Yankees fan, this man was the sound of 8 months of every year for almost my entire life. I hear him when I’m watching a game on tv or seeing my boys’ little league game from the stands, or making my dad laugh remembering the goofy-but-we-loved-em homerun calls. Thanks for the memories, John.
If I had to pick just one, it’s obviously: “Hayes, under it—makes the catch!”

One of the truest titans of the mic to ever sit in a booth.

as a yankees hater … rest in peace legend

I’m absolutely gutted. John Sterling is a legend. A wonderful broadcaster, a fun personality and a truly unique titan in the industry. What a loss.
A Sterling presence. Call the games on the other side, John. You’re among the immortal legends now.

RIP. I wasn’t aware he was sick.

Thanks for all the memories John ❤️

A legend, even if (because?) I loathed the sound of his voice when the Yankees were winning.

Devastating beyond words. RIP to a giant of baseball.

It was so goofy but heart warming when he and Suzyn would break into song. He was a New Yorker and one of a kind.
Doktorlip
The voice of the Yankees that i listened to on a portable radio, slid under my pillow to fall asleep to on those late games on a school night growing up. RIP
